Here is Ellie’s advice for…
Getting into competitive sport…
Find a sport you enjoy, there are so many different types of sports to choose. Pick a favourite sport then get involved in a club and don’t be afraid to have a go. But it will take hard work and dedication for you to be your best.
Getting into sport on an amateur level and still be highly motivated…
For me, when I was younger I always wanted to swim faster tomorrow than I did today. I think anyone involved in amateur sports should set goals to push themselves to be better. These goals could be increasing your physical fitness or improving your skills.
Parents wanting to inspire their daughter(s) to get into sport…
Give them the opportunity to try a variety of sports. Plus encourage them to develop a social group within their chosen sport. Girls are more likely to stick with it if they have friends there. My parents have been my key support from the beginning by being encouraging and nurturing my talent.
Getting involved in sports within your community…
The best way to get involved in fitness and sport is to volunteer at your local sports club. Most clubs need volunteers at all levels. Throughout my career volunteers have had a huge part to play – from the people helping out at my local swimming club to the Games Makers at London 2012.
How to incorporate exercise into your daily routine…
We can all find time to fit in exercise if we want, regardless of schedule. Make a plan and stick to it.
On how to defeat body image pressure…
Women and girls should be proud to be themselves, regardless of body type. We’re all different so why compare? There’s a variety of sports out there for all body types.
On keeping a healthy diet…
Eat a normal balanced diet – give your body the best food for your energy levels. Your body is your machine, you wouldn’t give a car the wrong fuel so why give your body the wrong fuel?
Staying motivated to keep fit…
It’s never going to be an easy road, there are going to be highs and lows but that’s life. Stay focused on what you want and learn from the lows to be able to achieve the highs.
How to NOT give up when things get tough…
When I need mental motivation I think back to happy times, such as the feeling of standing on top of the podium. That feeling helps to drive me through the low times.
Advice to women and girls with disabilities on lack of inclusive sport…
Before you join a sports club do your research, discuss any difficulties you may have with them prior to joining. Go along being prepared to work hard, have a positive, can-do attitude and make a difference.
Finally, Top Tip to live by…
Work hard, aim high and believe in yourself!
