Sirens for Success was launched in schools across Glasgow in April 2017, an offshoot of the Sirens elite team which plays in the UK Vitality Netball Superleague. Spirit’s extra funding means the programme will now extend across nine more Local Authorities in Scotland (Clackmannanshire, East Ayrshire, Falkirk, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire, Stirling and West Dunbartonshire).
“We are thrilled that Spirit’s backing means more girls will benefit from this brilliant programme,” said Spirit of 2012 Chief Executive Debbie Lye. “As well as bringing girls together to play netball, Sirens for Success teaches them about healthy, active lifestyles and positive body image, encouraging mental and physical wellbeing and setting them up in good habits that we hope will last a lifetime.”
Geraldine McGuire, Head of Development at Netball Scotland, said: “Sirens for Success is a powerful programme that creates an environment to instil resilience, self-belief, confidence and determination in young girls. Using our Sirens athletes as role models to deliver the programme, netball becomes a platform to promote and inspire young people to lead safe, healthy and active lives.
More than 15 schools and 300 schoolgirls have so far taken part in the programme, and there is already evidence of a range of successful outcomes. “Sirens for Success is delivering on a range of Active Scotland outcomes, including encouraging and enabling the inactive to be more active, and the active to stay active throughout life,” said Geraldine. “It is also providing girls with opportunities to participate, progress and achieve in sport, as well as connecting communities, partners and stakeholders off the court. Thanks to Spirit we can now extend the reach of this excellent programme.”
