Grantee Organisation

In 2014, Spirit of 2012 and the Big Lottery Fund funded Volunteer Scotland to open up volunteering at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games to a wider audience. It was one of Spirt of 2012’s first grant funded projects – setting the scene for our continued commitment to inclusive volunteering.

The project, which created a ‘Volunteer Support Pot’  was made up of £525,000 from the Big Lottery Fund and £122,000 from Spirit of 2012.

More than 18,000 volunteers helped to deliver the Commonwealth Games. Spirit of 2012’s grant was specifically to support access into the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, which needed 3,000 volunteers. Spirit of 2012’s grant included an additional £75,000 to increase the likelihood volunteers would undertake longer term volunteering, with Volunteer Scotland and Voluntary Arts Scotland working together to promote a range of post-volunteering opportunities.

Project aims

    1. Widen access to event volunteering, removing some of the financial barriers for talking part
    2. Increase the number of events volunteers going into longer term volunteering

Impact

OPEN CEREMONIES

It was one of the most awe-inspiring experiences I’ve ever done. It was just out of this world. The people I’d met, the different walks of life all coming together for one final big impact at Hampden, it was really out of this world! Such a good exercise for having to deal with different people, different walks of life, people with disabilities, people needing help to continue, it was just like pulling together as one big family.
