In 2015, Spirit was one the funders of Big Big Sing – a project that inspired hundreds of thousands of people the length and breadth of the UK to unite in celebration of singing.

In total, nearly 950,000 singers and 800 volunteers took part in one of hundreds of  Big Big Sing Days across the country from Shetland to Devon.

Big Big Sing was hailed as a major highlight of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme, creating some of the most memorable moments of the cultural celebrations surrounding the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and putting community singing at the heart of a global event. As well as hosting Song Stages across Glasgow during Games Time, Big Big Sing supported Hands Up for Trad to deliver The Big Song Relay. The relay saw the song Here’s to All Our Common Wealth passed from choir to choir along the route of the Queen’s Baton Relay, resulting in 72 unique performances.

Project aims

  1. Connect communities around the UK through a shared love of singing
  2. Examine the cultural impact of large events like the Commonwealth Games
